The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
I was blessed to grow up in a home where my parents were intentional about teaching me that the word of God was truth and how to apply it in my life. I was taught God’s word is always first priority and the final authority. When a question or challenge rises in my life, the first place I seek answers is God’s word. Then no matter the details of the journey, the diagnosis, the circumstances, etc., the Word of God is the final authority. I believe the Bible, and that is where I anchor. If God said it, I choose to believe it.
I am so thankful God has given us His very own Spirit to live in us and to lead us into all truth. God is a God of blessing and life, and wants to guide us to this place—many times, through our thoughts and words.
I clearly remember one of the first times I experienced this. I was singing a favorite song out loud. I knew all the words, but that day, the lyrics bothered me. I didn’t like what I was singing…I didn’t agree with what I was saying.
How often do we do that? Mindlessly allow words to come out of our mouths without thinking about them?
Our words dictate what we become. They reveal what’s in our heart.
At that moment, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes. I began to understand something I hadn’t before: the power of my words.

Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined. In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze
What an awesome thought that we all have the power to choose life or death each time we speak. Our WORDS determine the direction of our life. Our words must be His words.

Declare: I choose life today. I choose to speak words that are life, healing and wholeness. I am sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and am quick to respond to His leading.

This has been on my heart for a long time. Can I tell you a quick story?
So mu father-in-law, for some reason, constantly “jokes” to me about my childrens’ future dating-lives, which, in his stories, will always begin at age 13. My 2 sons and my daughter’s ages are currently 8, 6, and 3. And when my husband’s father makes these “jokes,” (in the presence of my kids!) the stories he dreams up are always about something inappropriate – like.. caring more about the boyfriend than anything else, or sneaking around and things like that. And lately, this has been infuriating me. Because I believe in the power of words. Not only is it confusing to my homeschooled, relatively sheltered (for-the-time-being) children, but who wants to think, much less, call those things onto their children or grandchildren’s lives!? He always ends these “jokes” by saying something like “oh boy I’ll just laugh and laugh when that happens.” And I basically have to just pretend to laugh a little and reply with “well..I’ll just have to be dead before I’d allow that to happen with my kids.”
All that to say..praise God for you and this post. 1 or 2 Peter (can’t remember which – legit pregnancy brain right now – baby #4. And frankly, maybe it’s neither of those books!?) prompts us to have a response, and you’ve made many responses ready for me. I’m going to focus on memorizing these for the future. For now, just this week I’ve been determined to separate myself from my husband’s family (which I know is an action that would gain mixed responses,) because of boundaries that have been crossed, and frankly, instances like those that occur with my father-in-law that I feel are just unhelpful and borderline evil in our life.
Anyway, I’m grateful for this post. Thank you for taking the time to study the Word and share!
