The Power Of Words (Part Two)

The Power Of Words (Part Two)

The tongue has the power of life and death.

Proverbs 18:21

Recently, I woke up very congested with a swollen throat. Throughout the day, I would catch myself thinking about my symptoms and I really wanted to tell my husband Josh about them…again.

I’d already shared with him and gotten advice on how to support my body, so REALLY what was the point of sharing, AGAIN? And then I realized the truth; it was more about the attention and sympathy.

Now, I’m not saying I should have denied I was feeling under the weather– that’s crazy! But that also doesn’t mean I had to surrender to my symptoms, give in to feeling lousy, and look for others to join me.

Having support as we go through the challenges of life–in health, relationships, finances, etc.–is vital. God has given us each other to help us through those tough times. So it’s definitely okay to share how we’re feeling and what we’re going through with a trusted friend. The Bible actually encourages us to do so (Galatians 6:2).

God has given us specific direction and hundreds of promises that belong to us as His children. It’s CRUCIAL that we find out what God has said about the words we speak over ourselves.

He has been so clear about HIS plans for our wellbeing and prosperity (Jeremiah 29:11). The words you speak are powerful. So we can choose to focus on the negative, or we can align ourselves with His will by speaking the words that He has proclaimed about our circumstances.

Jesus said that the THIEF comes to steal, kill and destroy but that HIS intention is life (John 10:10). Every day, we get to choose who and what we will agree with (Deut. 30:19). God tells us to choose life and we do this through the power of our words.

When we accept and agree with negative symptoms (or situations) by using repetitively negative words, we’re essentially giving in to the plan of the thief and making room for negative things that God never intended for us.

I’m so thankful for Holy Spirit and His faithfulness to remind us of God’s truth. My prayer is that the Holy Spirit would set a guard at my mouth. I want to be very sensitive and aware of what I’m saying and who I’m agreeing with at all times.

Today, when something like congestion and a swollen throat attack my body, I will ask my husband to lay hands on me and pray and I will agree by actively speaking God’s word over myself until I see that sickness leave! Psalm 103:1-3 has become one of my favorite power promises. Check it out, I bet it will become one of yours! 🙂

This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing your testimony of faith. It’s awesome to see faith that is in action from real life people. While reading this the Holy Spirit confirmed in me again that I need to chose words of love and faith, and make decrees of faith over negative situations. I’m praying that the Holy Spirit ( I call Him Ruach, short for the Hebrew translation ‘Ruach HaKodesh’) really moves in you and tour family this Pentecost!!!! Be blessed.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am generally a positive person, however, some continual difficult and unfavorable circumstances have left me struggling with discouragement. Choosing to continually confess and stand upon the promises of God is definitely something I need to purposefully re-strengthen in my life. Appreciate you, Dr. Chelsea!

It’s so easy to become discouraged, especially when you feel as though you are looking and looking for the right path and God just isn’t answering your prayers. But in reality he’s way ahead of you already. one of the most valuable passages of scripture that I like to remember when I am feeling discouraged comes from the last line of Isaiah 43:1 it says “you are mine.” It gives me goosebumps. You and I could be in no better hands 🙂
