Although I already practice a clean ingredient skincare routine, when I was pregnant, I made some adjustments to the products I used because I want to ensure that every ingredient I placed on my skin is baby-friendly. That being said, what are some great pregnancy safe skin care options?
Choosing “Clean” Skin Care Products
Before I dive into some of my favorite skincare products, I want to stress the importance of choosing products that are free from harmful chemicals. As the body’s largest organ, our skin absorbs everything we put on it. From shampoo to facial cleanser, product ingredients enter the bloodstream and can make their way to the baby.
There are certain ingredients that you may want to avoid during the nine months of pregnancy. I encourage you to choose a skincare brand that has a pregnancy line, designed with the baby’s safety in mind.

Product Ingredients To Avoid In Pregnancy
Unfortunately, there is a long list of toxic ingredients that aren’t safe for your skin—pregnant or not. I know it might feel overwhelming when researching labels, especially if you’re not familiar with many of the terms or names.
Keep in mind, there are various reasons to avoid certain ingredients. Some have cancer-causing properties, while others can affect hormones (which is something you definitely don’t want during pregnancy. Let your body do it’s thing!). Hormone-disrupting chemicals have been linked to a number of health problems including: infertility, obesity, diabetes, thyroid imbalance and certain types of cancers.
While pregnant, hormones such as estrogen and progesterone—amongst others—are elevated or in specific fluctuations, and for good cause; to provide the body with the functions it needs to grow a healthy baby. This is why you don’t want to consume anything that may interfere with what your body is doing naturally.
Vitamin A (Also Called Retinol)
Vitamin A is important for your baby’s embryonic growth, including the development of the heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes and bones, as well as the circulatory, respiratory and central nervous systems. There are many amazing benefits to this fat-soluble vitamin.
Yet, too much vitamin A can cause liver toxicity due to an overdose within the kidneys. An excess of vitamin A when pregnant can also create negative side effects such as birth defects.
Avoiding a cream that has retinol will prevent accidental overdose. Also, keep in mind the foods you consume may be high in vitamin A, such as: liver, cod liver oil, king mackerel and more. It’s best to talk with your physician or midwife when planning out your nutritional needs during pregnancy.
1. Salicylic Acid (Hydroxy Acids)
Found in many skincare products, salicylic acid fights acne and other skin disorders such as redness and inflammation. Consider avoiding this ingredient as it can cause: increased sensitivity to sunlight, internal bleeding, hives, possible birth defects, fetal anemia and chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system.
2. Parabens
Parabens are hormone disruptors and can interfere with the hormone activity within the body. They absorb into your skin easily and pass via the bloodstream to the placenta—the organ that provides vital nutrients to the baby. Unfortunately, they are found in many skincare products nowadays, which is why it’s best to choose an organic, clean skincare line.
3. Formaldehyde
This might sound obvious, but sometimes formaldehyde isn’t easy to spot on the back of the bottle. It has several different names: quaternium-15, dimethyl, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, borneol, imidazolidinyl urea and hydantoin. Formaldehyde is harmful to the baby, as it can cause birth defects and should be avoided completely.
4. Phthalates
Manufacturers add phthalates to products to make them feel more “spreadable.” Unfortunately, phthalates have a negative impact on fertility, which can make getting pregnant harder, and can even encourage the growth of diseases.
5. Fragrance and Perfume
Fragrances often contain “hidden” chemicals such as phthalates, which have been linked to hormone-disrupting effects. Fragrance is also connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma and allergies.
