Beauty Secrets: How To Make Your Skin Glow During The Winter Months

Among beauty trends, one that is timeless is the desire for dewy, glowing skin. While there are beauty products that can help you achieve the coveted healthy “summer glow” year-round, I believe the secret to glowing skin starts from the inside out. Many make-up products promise a glow. But ultimately, healthy skin is a result of both what you put in and on your body.

Potential Glow “Sabotagers” that Affect Your Skin

Your skin is the body’s largest organ and first line of defense. That’s why it’s so important to be aware of how your environment, daily health (diet, stress, fitness), and beauty products affect your skin.

This means opting for clean beauty products (learn more about what may be lurking in your products in my Clean Beauty article) that are non-toxic.

Fortunately, there are daily self-care and skincare practices that can increase your skin’s natural vibrancy and combat those glow sabotagers. A balance of both self-care and skincare can create that alluring, healthy glow year-round.

Part One – Self-Care Tips for that Skin Glow

Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. Exhibiting self-care with your body and daily health can have a major impact on the appearance of your skin. Self-care looks different for everyone, but below I share a few that you will want to consider when it comes to the self-care of your skin.

Tip 1: Stay Hydrated . . .Very Hydrated

Perhaps the most valuable secret to healthy, glowing skin is staying hydrated. We know that water is vital to our overall health, but do you know how vital it is for skin health? Water helps flush out toxins that can cause inflammation and blemishes, and improves your skin’s elasticity.

But water is typically delivered to your other organs before it is delivered to your skin cells. This means drinking LOTS of water is the key to glowing skin. It is recommended that drinking at least half your weight in water in ounces is a healthy amount of daily intake.  If you work out heavily or sweat a lot, up that intake!  

Overall, listen to what your body needs and experiment with the amount of water that feels right for you. There are many other benefits to drinking adequate, filtered water. You can learn more about clean water in my recent article, here.

An added bonus to naturally hydrated skin: you’ll need fewer beauty products and you’ll use them less often. This is an effective way to save money and limit your exposure to the complex mixture of ingredients that may be in your beauty and skincare products. Tip 2: Get Your Beauty Sleep

The term “beauty sleep” is a catchy phrase for a reason. Adequate sleep each night is essential for skin repair and studies show that new skin cells grow faster while asleep. When we sleep, our skin is busy healing itself from any potential damage we may have sustained during the day from pollution in the environment and UV rays.

We all know too well that look when we haven’t had enough sleep (tired, puffy eyes, dark circles, paler skin). We probably don’t need scientific studies to prove this to us, but I assure you many have concluded that physical changes happen to our faces when we are tired. So, aiming for restful sleep each night is another crucial component to glowing skin. 

Tip 3: Boost Your Collagen

Did you know that the most important protein in your body–and your skin–is collagen? This essential protein supports the skin’s cellular renewal process and promotes a healthy glowing (and firm) complexion.  It is responsible for skin elasticity and you guessed it, brightness. Unfortunately, this essential protein depletes as we age.

If your skin is feeling lackluster and far from glowing, combat that with collagen. There is a variety of collagen that boosts additional health benefits and it typically comes in powder or pill form. My go-to is the Multi Collagen Protein Powder from Ancient Nutrition. Not only is it clean and purely sourced (no hormones or chemicals), it packs a punch of five types of collagen from four food sources!

Part Two: Weekly Skin Care Routine for Glowing Skin All Year Long

It’s absolutely worth the time and energy to decide on a dedicated skincare routine–morning and night! Daily skin care is important because it helps remove layers of dead skin and clean your pores. If those layers keep building up, the pores in your skin may become clogged, causing wrinkles and lackluster skin tone.

Many skin care routines recommend a combination of cleanser, toner, moisturizer, serum, exfoliation, and sunscreen. Just be mindful that all skin types are different, and you may need to experiment with what is best for your skin. Nonetheless, daily skin care is important for healthy, glowing skin. While I use a complete skincare routine best suited for my skin, below are my favorite glow secrets and a few of my favorite products. 

Step 1: Exfoliate

I promise you, a gentle exfoliant is a game changer! It helps remove dry, dull skin and increases skin cell turnover. And you guessed it, it helps your skin glow by removing that build up that daily cleansing may not.  Not only is my skin instantly smoother, it glows throughout the week. 

Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, you may want to only use an active peel once a week or once every other week. Personally, I’ve found organic, natural fruit peels to be less abrasive than cleansing exfoliating products and chemical peels. Right now, my go-to for exfoliation is Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser, Daily Exfoliating Treatment. It is gentle enough for everyday use and smells amazing.

Step 2: Hydrate with a Hyaluronic Acid Serum

As we age, our skin may need extra hydration. Enter: the heavy hitter hydrator, hyaluronic acid. It can hold up to 100x its own weight in water, meaning it’ll draw water into the layers of your skin. I’ve found the best serums for hydration contain this “holy grail” of ingredients. More hydration = more glow for your skin. Be sure to apply serum before your moisturizer for the best results.

I highly recommend researching your hyaluronic serum, as it may have some concerning ingredients to be mindful of. The EWG highlights some common “highly hazardous ingredients” found in serums around the world.

Step 3: Use Safe, Mineral Sunscreen Every Day

I promise, it is so much easier to prevent sun-damage than fix it. You’ve heard this before; the sun’s rays wreak havoc on your skin by penetrating the surface into the deeper layers of your skin, causing damage to the cells.  In other words, it’s a glow sabotager! 

Over time, prolonged sun exposure and that sun-kissed tan increases wrinkles and dulls the appearance of your skin. It is the primary saboteur of healthy texture and color pigmentation (eek, age spots) on your skin. To protect your skin, use a mineral-based sunscreen (look for active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).

Step 4: Try a Clean, Organic Self Tanner for Extra Glow

To accentuate that glow from within, who doesn’t love some self-tanner or bronzer? For that extra sun-kissed, summer glow, I opt for a certified organic and vegan self-tanner (because it’s certainly no secret how I feel about chemicals being applied to my skin). 

My go-to for a radiant, natural-looking glow is Eco Tan Face Tan Water. It locks in moisture and is brimming with antioxidants. This non-comedogenic self-tanner is safe to use and won’t clog your pores.

Step 5: Keep Makeup Tools Clean

Ladies, let’s not forget about our makeup brushes, bags, and sponges–they are basically a breeding ground for oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.  This can certainly derail your quest for glowing skin.  

Ideally, you should clean all of your makeup tools regularly. I usually clean mine every other week. I use Ecotools Makeup Brush Shampoo since it is made with gentle plant-based ingredients, and is free of parabens, phthalates, and petroleum-based ingredients.
