During the warmer months, soaking up the sunshine and sitting under sunset skies also means keeping bugs at bay. The remedy to this summertime nuisance: Bug spray. The potential problem with that remedy? Many conventional bug sprays and insect repellents contain ingredients that could pose a hazard to your health, so many people are turning to natural bug spray.
Chemicals of Concern
Like other common household products under your sink or on your bathroom counter, bug spray is categorized as a cosmetic product–one of the least regulated industries in the United States. It is also considered a pesticide. What does this mean for your safety? Unfortunately, many widely used and effective bug repellents contain chemicals of concern.
Conventional bug repellents contain a mix of active ingredients, such as DEET, that are listed on the label, as well as inactive ingredients. The pesky problem here is both active and inactive ingredients can contain chemicals that may harm your health and the environment.
If you share the same concern I do about exposure to questionable ingredients, you may want to opt for a natural bug spray.
Is DEET Dangerous?
So what bites? All bugs aside, it’s important to consider the mixed reviews surrounding the most commonly used chemical repellent in bug sprays: DEET. Used by the general public for over 40 years, and even recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it’s acquired a bit of a sticky reputation.
The potential danger with DEET is that it is often directly in contact with your skin. Even though it is deemed highly effective with proper application and precaution, it is a documented neurotoxin that absorbs into your skin and remains in your bloodstream for up to 12 hours.
Absorption through skin can disrupt or even change your hormones, causing long term health issues. Studies link DEET to skin irritations, rashes, respiratory issues, and neurological effects. Keep in mind, even though you may not experience the negative side effects right away, steady toxic build up over time can cause serious damage to your body.
Over time, direct application and absorption of DEET into your skin could pose a threat to the nervous system. In 2014, the EPA conducted an interim registration review to ensure its safety based on current scientific knowledge. Their study concluded that “normal use” does not pose a threat to the general population, including children. However, until the Endocrine Disrupter Screening is complete, potential hazard to humans cannot be concluded.
Unlike the EPA, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is not so sure of DEET’s safety. They urge caution when using DEET. High dosages and daily exposure is especially problematic for children. They conclude it is “generally safe” when used sparingly and particularly in areas where disease-carrying pests are rampant.
Other Chemicals to be Aware of
- Picardian
According to the EWG, a 5-10% concentration of this chemical may protect for 5-12 hours. It has low inhalation toxicity and is not as irritating to the skin as DEET. Studies show it does not have the same neurotoxicity concern as DEET. A considerable alternative to DEET, as the pros outweigh the cons.
- IR3535
Used in Europe for over 20 years, this ingredient came to the United States in 1999. While it can be irritating to the eyes, it poses little safety risks. Studies conclude it works just as well at repelling mosquitoes as DEET, and that is more effective at repelling ticks. Another considerable alternative, as European studies do not report health problems.

Natural Bug Spray Alternatives
I’ve researched, and I’ve experimented. Essential oils harness the compounds that plants use to repel bugs (without pesticides!). Many plants store chemicals that naturally repel bug predators. I like using oils because they are natural and I know they don’t contain synthetic chemicals that are found in most store-bought bug sprays. Moreover, when used correctly, they are less likely to irritate your skin and do not pose a hazard to your wellbeing.
If you want to skip the DEET and other chemicals of concern, consider making a natural bug spray. I personally LOVE DoTERRA. There are a variety of essential oils and natural ingredients that can safely protect you from summer pests.
Which Essentials Oils Should I Use?
Not all essential oils will work against bugs; however, there are quite a few that are effective. You may have to test and try some out, as some may work better than others for your body’s chemistry. Herbal knowledge is truly empowering. Check out these natural alternatives that you can mix and match to keep the bugs at bay:
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
According to the CDC and the WHO, Lemon Eucalyptus oil is the most effective oil for a natural insect repellent. This botanically-based ingredient is most effective on mosquitoes and deer ticks.
Citronella
People have used plants since the time of the Greeks and the Romans to repel bugs. The citronella plant is one of the most widely used natural repellents. The scent of citronella oil masks scents that bugs–specifically mosquitos–are typically attracted to. This oil is registered with the FDA as a natural repellent. Consider planting a citronella plant near your patio for extra protection.
Lemongrass Oil
The smell of Lemongrass repels many bugs, as this plant contains citronella oil. Like the citronella plant, lemongrass is a lush green plant that mosquitos apparently despise the scent of.
Tea Tree Oil
This oil contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and also supports preventing and treating bug bites. Tea Tree oil repels mosquitoes, ticks, bees, fleas, bed bugs, and spiders. Did you know it also provides prevention against infection and relief to any pesky bug bites?
Rosemary Oil
Commonly used in many natural pesticides, Rosemary oil can kill and repel certain bugs. Studies suggest effectiveness in repelling both mosquitos and ticks that carry Lyme disease.
Cedarwood
Much like cedar closets and chest deterring bugs, cedarwood essential oil is a great additive for bug-proofing yourself and your home. This oil packs a powerful punch and kills ticks in high doses. Consider using this for your pets, too!
The Best Store-Bought Natural Bug Sprays
If you’d like to take the guesswork out of mixing and matching, Dr. Axe makes a bug spray that truly smells amazing. Check out my favorite homemade bug spray here. If making your own spray isn’t your thing, there are natural alternatives that you can buy in the stores or online. Here are some that I’ve tried and found effective:
- Babyganics Natural Insect Repellent
Made with 100% essential oils and gentle enough for use on babies, this bug spray won’t leave you sticky! Its DEET-free formula is also free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, artificial fragrances, and dyes. Purchase it on my Amazon store here. - Wondercide Natural Insect Repellent
Safe for the whole family, even pets, this formula is naturally derived and doesn’t contain DEET. It contains essential oils and no harsh chemicals (like artificial colors, fragrances, or synthetic pesticides). You will find it is powerful enough to repel mosquitos, ticks, and fleas, as well as other pesky insects. Purchase it on my Amazon store here. - Murphy’s Natural Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent
With a claim that it is “fiercely effective” against mosquitoes, Murphy’s bug spray repels bugs for up to six hours. 30% of the product is made of lemon eucalyptus–the only plant-derived ingredient recommended by the CDC & EPA. However, children under the age of three should not use this product. Purchase it on my Amazon store here.
Suggested Use for Natural Bug Spray
Unlike store-bought bug sprays containing DEET, natural bug spray coverage doesn’t last as long. Apply plant-derived oils liberally and frequently–about every 1-2 hours. On the bright side, you are not dousing yourself in any concerning chemicals, and one could argue that your bug spray will smell amazing. Say goodbye to bug bites and hello to warm summer nights spent under the stars.
Find What Works Best For You
As I’ve suggested in other articles, I encourage you to learn more about this topic for yourself. My tips and alternative suggestions about bug spray help limit exposure to chemicals that may harm human health.
Just as you would consider precaution with chemicals, please keep in mind essential oils can damage or irritate your skin if not diluted properly. Even with homemade products, I always spot-check my skin for any reactions.
Do you have your own homemade bug spray you make? I’d love to hear from you!
Such a helpful article! Beyond all the yucky stuff in it, the smell of DEET is soooo irritating to me – I can’t wait to give these alternatives a shot!
