Microneedling is one of the “newer,” highly raved about therapies that claims many benefits including increased collagen production, improved acne scarring, the reversal of sun damage, decreased pore size, wrinkle improvement, and more.
I first heard about microneedling from several friends and trusted colleagues. Then, I read a 2009 study where almost 100% of microneedling participants reported skin improvements. So I decided to give it a try. (Side note: I have not had a professional micro-needling treatment done, only experimented on my own at home.)
What Is Microneedling?
The microneedling procedure typically uses a micro needle roller–or derma roller–which is a device containing many tiny needles. You roll the roller over the face, which gently punctures tiny little holes in the top layer of your skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body to create new, collagen-rich tissue.
In fact, a 2008 study found that after four microneedling treatments spaced one month apart, people experienced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months post procedures!
When administered in a clinical setting, professionals often numb your skin beforehand to help alleviate any discomfort that may occur during the procedure. Because of this, they also may use a slightly longer needle to puncture the skin. The needles used typically range from 0.5mm-3.5mm in depth, depending on how often the procedure is done and the skin issue being targeted.

What Is Microneedling Used For?
There are many benefits of microneedling. It helps target specific skin issues such as:
- Acne scars
- Sunspots
- Fine lines
- Large pores
- Scarring
- Uneven skin tone
- Dull skin
Microneedling may also be done on other parts of the body to target scarring and improve skin elasticity. Studies show great results when using light dermarolling over stretch marks as well.
Microneedling Before And After
While needles puncturing your skin may sound intense, it’s actually minimally invasive with very little recovery time. The larger the needle depth used, the more red and irritated your skin may become immediately afterward.
I personally found that right after I microneedle, I look sunburned (See the after photo below). This skin irritation may last a few hours to a few days post-procedure, depending on your skin’s irritability.
Studies show that post-procedure, the skin is able to more readily absorb serums and lotions, but also may be more sensitive. Because of this, make sure to apply more mild skin care products until your skin has fully healed.
It’s important to note that it’s possible to over microneedle your skin. This can lead to tissue damage and broken capillaries, among other things. Because of this, experts recommend limiting derma rolling sessions to once a month when seeing a professional who is utilizing a deeper needle puncture.
How To Microneedle At Home
When I microneedle at home, I use 1.0mm and 0.5mm derma roller without any skin numbing cream and find it tolerable. I recommend trying this one. If you feel nervous at all, I’d start with the 0.25mm depth. When you use a smaller derma roller size, you can increase the frequency.
- Soak your derma roller in alcohol for five to ten minutes before and after each use.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser before, and wash lightly with water afterward.
- Divide your face into “sections” mentally avoiding your eyes. Then, firmly but gently roll over one section horizontally in one direction (ie. right to left) horizontally 2-3 times.
- Then go back and repeat the same process, this time rolling vertically in one direction (ie. top to bottom).

- Make sure your skin fully recovers between sessions.

After consistently microneedling at home once a month for the past few months, I can honestly say I love this therapy. In the days following, my skin looks visibly plumper. It glows and I can see a difference in some of the fine lines on my forehead.
Having a professional treatment done is definitely on my agenda of things to try. I mean, if the results have been so good at home, I can only imagine how effective it would be in a professional setting.

I have been getting Fractora treatments (microneedling + radio frequency) for the past 9 months. And it has been a total game changer. I scar easily and had some decent acne scarring on my cheeks. I’ve had laser treatments and chemical peels in the past that did little to nothing. But, THIS has made a HUGE difference. My scars are much less visible and my skin is so softs with very few lines (I’m 40). So, yes! Professional microneedling is worth every penny in my opinion.

Yes! Love it! Do it once or twice a week. Prime my skin with rose oil and then roll away. Do it before bed and “sunburn” is gone when I wake up the next day. 🙂
