Many believe that as we age, we must accept an inevitable decline in vigor, skin quality, appearance, and overall health. Well, I do not! There are several daily practices you can add to your beauty routine that will maximize anti aging in your body.
At around the age of 25, some may start to notice signs of aging skin. Because of this, there are endless amounts of anti-aging creams and protocols marketed everywhere we look, but which ones actually work, and is there a cost? (I’m not just talking about what it will cost your bank account, either!)
Swap Botox For These Natural Anti-Aging Tricks
Fortunately, I have a few tips I picked up during my search for products and practices that both benefit and support my body without pumping it full of toxic chemicals. There’s actually a lot you can do to naturally boost the elasticity in your skin and protect it from further damage. The exciting news is that you can start now!
Here are my top 7 natural anti-aging tips. (My mom uses a lot of the tips below, too, and her skin is more vibrant than most women in their 30s! In fact, most people assume she’s my sister.)
Disclosure: Thank you for reading and sharing my content! The suggested products are ones that my family and I would also use, but I may collect a small commission on purchases made through some of the affiliate links on this page.
Anti Aging Tip #1: Frownies
Believe it or not, we actually make facial expressions in our sleep. Although interesting, it doesn’t help preserve the youthful appearance of our skin. The more repeated facial movements, the more “expression wrinkles” we collect. For example, raising your eyebrows causes your forehead to furrow. If you do this often enough, small and/or deep wrinkles may start to appear.
This is why I love using “Frownies!” When applied correctly, they actually smooth out current wrinkles and help protect against the formation of further expression lines. You simply put a Frownie over your wrinkle while pulling apart and smoothing out the skin in that area.
When you try to make a facial movement, that would naturally cause the skin to wrinkle, the Frownie makes the movement uncomfortable, so you naturally avoid it. Over time, they help you train your facial muscles to evade these excessive movements throughout the day, too.
Tip #2: Silk Pillowcases
Silk pillowcases are amazing for so many reasons. Not only are they soft, but they can actually aid in wrinkle prevention! When we sleep, our faces are lying against our pillows for hours at a time. Sometimes, creases in the pillowcase or our positioning cause the skin on our face to pull. Eventually, this can lead to loss of elasticity and wrinkles. If you’ve ever woken up in the morning to find your face covered in a million pillowcase lines, then you know what I’m talking about!
Over time, those pillowcase lines can actually turn to wrinkles as your skin adapts to the pattern of creasing—just as it does with expression lines.
Think about it: You could be spending 8 hours a day with your skin either stretched or smooshed to create a crease. That adds up fast! When switching to a silk pillowcase, it provides a softer place for your face to rest, therefore preventing a harsher environment that can cause creasing or harsh pulling on your skin. It’s also hypoallergenic and helps keep your face cool.
Another bonus of using a silk pillowcase is that it cuts down on hair breakage due to less friction on hair. This, in turn, reduces frizz and cuts down on split ends!
This is a silk pillowcase that I love.
Tip #3: Drink LOTS of Water
You already know my stance on water; it’s vital for everyday functions of the organs in our body! Approximately 50-70% of our overall body mass is made up of water. Water helps to remove toxins and waste products from the body and cells. When we are dehydrated, these processes are affected and toxins can build up over time. Water is also necessary in order to process nutrients from food and then deliver them to the body.
Why Dehydration Makes Us Age Faster
When we don’t drink enough water, our skin becomes dry and dull. The cells in our skin (as well as the rest of our body) require water in order to function. Water helps carry nutrients into cells, and then transports waste out of them. Because of this, when our bodies are dehydrated, it’s easy to visibly notice the effects in our skin. And to make matters worse, this dehydrated state encourages wrinkles by contributing to the loss of skin elasticity.
Because water helps move toxins out of cells, something as simple as upping your water intake can make a massive difference in the appearance of your skin! This can be especially noticeable if you don’t typically drink much water on a daily basis.
It is recommended that individuals consume half of their body weight in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, you should drink a minimum of 70 ounces of water each day (70 is half of 140). If you are physically active and exercise or sweat that day, you should consume more.
Stay Hydrated All Day
To ensure I’m drinking enough water throughout the day, I use the same water bottle every day. You can find the 32oz water bottle I use here—I have it in white! In doing this, I know I have to drink a minimum of 3 full bottles each day. I bring it with me everywhere and continue to fill it up. Doing this helps me stay on track, holds me accountable and makes it easy to know exactly where I’m at in my consumption throughout the day.
#4: Consume Collagen and Bone Broth
Collagen is a critical protein our body needs to function and heal at the highest level. It makes up the majority of your bones, ligaments, tendons, fascia, skin, hair, nails, blood vessels, the lining of your digestive system and much more! It is vital for the health of our joints and is a key component in skin strength and elasticity.
Collagen also constitutes the majority of the tendons and ligaments in the body. In fact, 30% of all the protein in your body is made up of collagen, so it is critical to add it into your daily diet. Because of this, approximately 20-30% of your daily protein intake should come from collagen-rich sources. I honestly make sure to take it every day!
Your body is able to create some collagen on its own, but in order to do so, it needs the building blocks to construct it. These are only found in collagen-rich foods and supplements such as bone broth and collagen protein powder.
How To Choose Collagen For Anti Aging
There are many different types of collagen, each having a slightly different function in the body, but all necessary! For example, very rarely do we see someone taking only a B3 vitamin. This is because there are numerous types of B vitamins, and each has an important function in the body. Instead, it’s much more common to take a B complex vitamin. This should be the same with collagen.
Many collagen supplements available today contain maybe one or two types of collagen at most. While this is good, our bodies need primarily 5 different types of collagen for health. This is why I consume the multi collagen protein powder by Ancient Nutrition in addition to their bone broth protein powder (specifically chocolate).
#5: Use Sunscreen
If you’re looking to protect your skin from premature aging and damage, daily sunscreen is a must. Sunscreen is designed to help protect and filter out damaging ultraviolet radiation. Over time, these rays contribute to skin damage, premature skin aging, uneven skin texture and pigmentation, wrinkles and age spots.
But hear me out on this, not all sun is bad! I recommend getting 15-20 minutes of sun exposure (without sunscreen on your body—I still wear it on my face) each day to keep vitamin D levels high. However, try to stick to going outside when the sun is not at its strongest (ideally before 10:00 a.m., or after 4:00 p.m.
Not so fast though…not all sunscreens are created equal. Most sunscreens are loaded with harmful chemicals. Remember, your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on it affects how your body and organs function. I personally use this toxin-free face sunscreen every day.
#6: Consistently Exfoliate
As we age, our skin doesn’t turn over as quickly as when we were younger. This can cause our skin to look dull, uneven and even contribute to breakouts, which is why exfoliation is one of my top anti-aging tips!
Exfoliants help increase skin cell turnover and, in turn, limit acne. Exfoliating gently removes the dead skin cells and helps to create a brighter, smooth surface. In addition, once exfoliated, your skin is able to better absorb the products you’re applying!
As with any other product you put on your skin, it’s important to use organic and toxin-free exfoliants to prevent chemical exposure in the body. You can find one of my favorite facial exfoliants here.
#7: Use Essential Oils
Essential oils are organic compounds extracted from plants that can contain great healing properties. They have been highly concentrated, so they are potent in small amounts. Essential oils are composed of small molecules, and because of this, can easily cross the cell barrier and quickly be absorbed into the body.
Essential Oils That Support Anti Aging
There are hundreds of essential oils available, and each has unique properties and benefits associated with its use. Because of this, there are many oils that greatly contribute to skin health, but a few stand out.
Yarrow Pom
My new favorite essential oil is Yarrow Pom. In this blend, Yarrow essential oil is combined with cold-pressed pomegranate seed oil to create a powerhouse product. This oil works to activate protective mechanisms in the body that help prevent the breakdown of elasticity and collagen in the skin. The reviews on this product hail its potency.
Yarrow Pom has become one of my skincare staples—I add a few drops into my hand with my moisturizer, mix them together and then apply to my face daily. I like to add a few drops to my body lotion applications, as well! You can find it here.
Rose Geranium
Another essential oil that I consider a staple in my skincare is rose geranium. This oil is known for its use in the treatment of aging and wrinkled skin. It helps to minimize the look of wrinkles by tightening the facial skin, thus slowing down the effects of aging. I like to apply 1-2 drops of this oil to my daily moisturizer and then apply to my skin. You can find rose geranium essential oil here.
Frankincense
This essential oil is also one of my go-to’s. Frankincense can be used for a number of things. When in question, and regardless of the issue, frankincense can typically be beneficial. But it also has specific healing properties for the skin.
Frankincense has the ability to strengthen skin and improve tone, elasticity, and appearance. It also helps combat bacteria to prevent breakouts and blemishes. Frankincense is also beneficial for its ability to help heal and fade stretch marks, scars and even out skin tone. As I said, frankincense can do it all! Find the frankincense essential oil I use here.
Choose High Quality Essential Oils
One quick note on essential oils—not all essential oils are created equally. Many are not pure, contain additional additives and are synthetic. In fact, many are actually worthless for your health! So don’t run to your local drug store and grab an essential oil! When buying essential oils, it’s important to choose pure ones that are certified USDA organic, 100 percent pure, therapeutic grade and indigenously sourced.
